Professor Ian Hamilton-Craig

Professor Ian Hamilton-Craig MBBS (Adel), PhD (McMaster), FRACP, FCSANZ, FLS (Lond) is one of Australia’s leading experts in the management of lipid disorders, particularly familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and other genetic dyslipidaemias. Another special interest is the management of statin intolerance.
 
Ian is Professor of Preventive Cardiology at Flinders University School of Medicine and Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Griffith University School of Medicine, Gold Coast Qld.
 
In the past he has directed Lipid Clinics with SA Heart (1995 - 2005), and Gold Coast University Hospital (2005 - 2015). He was chairman of the Queensland Lipid Group (2008 - 2015), and has been chairman of the SA Lipid Group since 2020. He is a member of the CSANZ Cardiovascular Genetics Council, the CSANZ Council on Preventive Cardiology, the Familial Hypercholesterolaemia-Australasia Committee of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society, and the US National Lipid Association. 
 
Ian is the author of over 200 publications on coronary risk factors and lipid therapy, as well as books for the general public including Men’s Health, Bypass, Cholesterol Control, and State of the Heart – Cholesterol and Triglyceride Control.
 
His current research interests include the Barossa Family Heart Study (investigating FH Morocco, the gene imported to the Barossa in the 1800s by German immigrants) and the SHIP Study (Management of Severe Hypercholesterolaemia in Primary Care).
