SA Heart Research Achievement Awards

Published: Aug 27, 2012

The SA Heart Research Achievement Awards for 2012 have been decided, with the Awards night taking place on 26 June at Chloe’s Restaurant.

SA Heart has long been involved with education of South Australia’s medical community as well as research, particularly through participation in clinical trials work.

The SA Heart Education and Research Foundation is proud to assist by funding the SA Heart Research Achievement Awards, with prizes in two categories:
1. Medical practitioners who are Cardiology Fellows or PhD students involved in cardiac
    research in South Australia
2. Cardiac Registrars involved in cardiac research in South Australia.

It was particularly pleasing to see a large number of applicants this year, with abstracts received from cardiac researchers at all major cardiology teaching facilities in South Australia. The judging panel, comprising Professor John Beltrame, Associate Professor Matthew Worthley (Chairman of SA Heart) and Dr Bronte Ayres (Chairman of the SA Heart Education and Research Foundation), selected two finalists in each category, with all finalists making presentations to a gathering of cardiologists.

All finalists’ presentations were of a very high standard, with the winners being:

Dr Alicia Chan (Fellow/PhD category) – Effects of ageing on nitric oxide signalling in women: comparison with polycystic ovarian syndrome
Dr Christopher Wong (Registrar category) – Pericardial fat is associated with atrial fibrillation: Evidence for an arrhythmogenic role of localised adiposity

These research awards are a way of giving back to the cardiology community and supporting South Australia’s medical fraternity in their fantastic work in cardiac research.
